What People Say
About City of London
The City of London, often simply known as “the City,” is a historic borough situated at the heart of Greater London. Covering just over one square mile, it is renowned as a major global financial and commercial hub, housing key financial institutions such as the Bank of England and London Stock Exchange. Established initially by the Romans around AD 50 as Londinium, the City maintains historical monuments, including the iconic St Paul’s Cathedral and the Tower of London, symbolizing its rich past. Governed by the unique City of London Corporation, the borough is distinct from Greater London’s administrative framework and even maintains its own police force, providing governance primarily catering to financial and commercial interests. Although residents number fewer than 10,000, a daytime population exceeding 500,000 reflects its bustling significance. Historically, the City has been home and inspiration to notable individuals such as Sir Thomas More, Samuel Pepys, and Christopher Wren, the architect behind many prominent buildings following the Great Fire of London in 1666. Today, the City of London remains an influential economic powerhouse, seamlessly blending centuries of tradition with modernity as it continues to shape global commerce from its traditional British core.
