Best Lenses For Event Photographers

Every event photographer is different and as such, there aren’t really any best lenses for event photographers.

Ultimately, it’s down to you as a photographer to decide the most appropriate lenses and equipment for each, highly unique event photography commission.

This article breaks down what’s worked for me – I get a lot of emails from other London event photographers asking what lenses I use for my event photography work.

My answer tends to be the same; I mostly have only two to three lenses in the camera bag at any one time.

I normally shoot up to four conferences or corporate event photography each week. The vast majority of these are London events, so it’s crucial my kit bag is lightweight and easy to carry whilst using public transport.

I’ve whittled down the photographic gear for each event photography job, mainly because I want functioning shoulders and a good back! But also because I feel by keeping things simple, I’m freer to focus on the job in hand. This way, I always get the great event photos that the clients needs (and expects).

Sony Zeiss 35mm 1.4 prime lens

My two best event photographer lenses are as follows…

Firstly my Sony Zeiss 35mm 1.4 prime lens, suitable for most wide-angle shots. A big plus with this lens is when you can’t use flash during certain parts of the networking or panel discussion – its great under low light.

Here is an event photo example taken earlier this year.

Sony 70-200mm 2.8 zoom lens

The second photography lens that I use a lot is the very heavy but brilliant Sony 70-200mm 2.8 zoom lens which is used a-lot for my corporate event photography in London.

This lens only stops down to 2.8 but the flexibility of the lens makes it so useful for the jobs when I have to be discreet but get the required close-up shots during events.

On a personal level, I strongly believe it’s one of the best lenses for event photographers, though appreciate this is a very subjective matter.

Here is an example of a corporate event that I was commissioned to photograph.
